GUIDE

How to Prepare Kava

Whether you choose instant or traditional grind kava, preparation is simple. This guide covers both methods step by step, along with tips for getting the best experience from your first shell to your hundredth.

Instant Kava Method

Total time: approximately 1 minute

1

Measure Your Kava

Add 1-2 tablespoons of instant kava powder to your coconut shell or cup.

2

Add Water

Pour 200-300ml of room temperature or cool water over the powder.

3

Stir Well

Stir vigorously for 20-30 seconds until fully dissolved. A small whisk or fork works well.

4

Drink & Enjoy

Drink the full shell in one or two gulps. Follow with a small sip of water or a slice of fruit.

Traditional Grind Method

Total time: approximately 15 minutes

1

Measure Your Kava

Place 2-4 tablespoons of traditional grind kava into a muslin strainer bag.

2

Soak

Submerge the bag in a bowl with 500ml of warm (not hot) water. Let it soak for 5 minutes.

3

Knead & Squeeze

Knead, twist, and squeeze the bag firmly in the water for 5-10 minutes. The water should become cloudy and opaque.

4

Strain & Serve

Remove the strainer bag, squeezing out remaining liquid. Pour into coconut shells and share with friends.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Water temperature matters. Room temperature or slightly warm water works best. Avoid boiling water as it can break down kavalactones.
  • Drink on an empty stomach. Kava is most effective when consumed 2-3 hours after a meal.
  • Start small. Begin with one shell and wait 15-20 minutes before deciding whether to have another.
  • Follow with a chaser. A slice of pineapple, mango, or coconut water makes a great palate cleanser.

"There is no wrong way to drink kava. Whether alone or in a circle, quick or slow, the calm will find you."
